Stardust Movie Pick

Untitled Document

Stardust is a fabulous and beautifully shot film based on Neil Gaiman's acclaimed graphic novel of the same name. I absolutely adored this family-friendly film and would say that this is easily in my own top ten of the year. It is a simple, funny and witty tale about a seemingly ordinary boy named Tristan Thorn (newcomer Charlie Cox) from the town of Wall who falls in love with the most beautiful girl in town and hastily promises her to bring back a fallen star. Sienna Miller is brilliant as Victoria, the beautiful but cold and not particularly bright object of our hero's misguided affections. The star in this case is actually a woman named Yvaine (Claire Danes, Evening) who has accidentally been knocked out of the sky and now has a broken leg. Tristan's journey to retrieve the fallen star leads him past the walls of his village and into a fantasy world of witches, fairies and ghosts. On Tristan's journey home, he meets Captain Shakespeare (Robert De Niro), a fearsome air-pirate with a secret penchant for old lace and bustiers who teaches him sword-fighting and a bit about wooing the ladies. Tristan and Yvaine are pursued by a powerful witch (the devilishly luminous Michelle Pfeiffer) who craves the heart of a star for her own vain purposes. Our hero also learns the meaning of true love and grows up into the man that he was always meant to be.
